Position Overview

Under direct supervision of the Operations Manager, the Utility Operator II will primarily be responsible for maintaining, repairing, and monitoring the municipal water and wastewater system components to ensure optimum performance of the infrastructure and operations of the water supply, treatment and distribution systems and wastewater treatment and collection.

Primary responsibilities:

Responsible for the operations and maintenance of the Wastewater Treatment System, including:

  • Daily inspection, maintenance and recording data of blowers and effluent pumps.
  • Daily inspection, maintenance and recording data of the head works facility.
  • Maintaining effluent discharge within operating condition perimeters.
  • Coordinate and/or perform sampling as required under the Municipal Sewage Regulations’ conditions.
  • Inspection of Infiltration Basins

Responsible for the operations and maintenance of the Wastewater Collection System, including:

  • Inspection of Sanitary Manholes and sewer piping.
  • Assessment of problems and organize regular maintenance of collection system.

Responsible for the operations and maintenance of the Water Treatment System, including:

  • Maintaining potable water provided to customers within operating condition perimeters.
  • Assisting in surface water management and projections
  • Daily inspection, maintenance and recording data of analyzing equipment, control valves, pressure filters, UVT reactors, treated water reservoirs.

Responsible for the operations and maintenance of the Water Distribution System, including:

  • Maintaining potable water provided to customers within operating condition perimeters.
  • Potable water distribution system (valves, mains, services, sampling stations, etc.).
  • Perform “A” & “B” inspections and make repairs to Utility fire hydrants including unidirectional hydrant flushing. Winterize hydrants and inspect to meet the requirements of the BC Fire Code.

Responsible for the operations and maintenance of the Propane gas plant and distribution grid system including:

  • Daily inspection and recording of gas plant operation.
  • Setting up plant for delivery of propane trucks and recording data.
  • Assist in the response to gas odor calls.

Other Miscellaneous Duties:

  • Assist and provide information to customers and guests as required.
  • Ensure all operations of the utility are performed in compliance with the various regulators and all safety requirements.
  • Record and report to management (and regulators if required) all known damage.
  • Attend Utility meetings and Site Meetings with owners/contractors to help identify locations of gas, sanitary, and potable water.
  • Perform inspections on utility service connections from the customer’s site to the Utilities’ distribution or collection systems (including but not limited to the installation of backflow prevention devices, water meters, gas meters, sewer inspection chambers.
  • Perform non-fire suppression hook ups and temporary meter installations at all fire hydrants and standpipes.
  • Assist & coordinate repairs to utility infrastructures including emergency repairs to potable water, wastewater, and gas infrastructure and facilities.
  • Operation of Heavy Equipment (as needed) to assist field staff.
  • Coordinate snow removal at gas plant, fire hydrants as needed for emergency access purposes.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum 3 years related field or utility experience.
  • EOCP Water Treatment Certification Level II and/or;
  • EOCP Wastewater Treatment Certification Level II and/or;
  • EOCP Water Distribution Certification Level II.
  • Consideration will be given to operators with Level 1 certification in any discipline.
  • Experience with SCADA and related computer applications.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, written skills and mechanical aptitude.
  • Strong working knowledge of chemistry and biology.
  • Knowledge of water distribution systems, valve maintenance and knowledge of fire hydrant installation & maintenance procedures.
  • Experience as a heavy equipment operator.
  • Self-starter, able to work with little supervision and team player.
  • Knowledge of provisions of WHIMIS procedures.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Willingness to work shift work, weekends, statutory holidays, stand-by and overtime as required.
  • Willingness to work in a variety of terrain and adverse weather conditions.
  • Willingness to report to work at Big White Ski Resort.
  • Schedule: 40 hours per week. Scheduled days change as the Winter/Summer/shoulder seasons operations change.
